Our new fellowship hall doubles as a gymnasium, which we open up to the community
every Tuesday night at 7:30pm for volleyball. Anyone is welcome to come and enjoy this sport in
a not-too-competitive atmosphere. We do ask that children under 14 not attend, and that
participants sign a waiver taking responsibility for their own actions - for insurance reasons.
While there are regular players of many ages, some from our church, there are many newcomers
who enjoy this opportunity for exercise, fun, and fellowship.
We have enjoyed working together with several congregations of various denominations
in our local community. There is a group of ministers who meet monthly for mutual
encouragement. We often hold a common Good Friday worship service. We have planned
cooperative programs for the "Week of Prayer for Christian Unity" in mid-January, one year
celebrating the Eucharist together at a Wednesday evening service, with a jointly produced week-long devotional booklet provided to our members. Another year our pastors exchanged pulpits on
a Sunday morning. In October we pull together a community CROP Walk to raise money toward
helping alleviate world hunger. The 1997 walk involved over 120 walkers who raised over
$10,000. Of this amount, 25% returns locally to fund the "Beans and Bread" soup kitchen in
Baltimore. The rest is funneled through Church World Service and other relief agencies.
